Gas safety information

Characteristics of petroleum gas

Liquefied petroleum gas is a safe and reliable gas fuel that is non-toxic, colorless and odorless. In order to make it easier for people to detect leakage, a special smell is added. In addition, LPG is heavier than air and will settle on the ground or below in the event of a leak.

LPG safety precautions

1: All installation/removal/periodic inspection/maintenance of gas appliances must be carried out by a registered gas installation technician employed by a registered gas contractor.
2: Gas stoves must be supervised when in use.
3: When going out, make sure all gas stoves are not in use.
4: When the stove is burning, the flame should be stable and close to blue. If you find that the flame color is abnormal (such as yellow/orange/green, etc.), please contact us for repair or safety inspection.
5: Indoor decoration projects will inevitably damage pipes in the wall. When carrying out decoration projects, users should remember to urge relevant personnel to take reasonable steps to avoid damaging gas pipes/electrical pipes/water pipes and other equipment hidden in the wall.
6: Children should be kept away from gas stoves and fires under any circumstances.

Water heater

You should only purchase the domestic gas water heater that has been approved by EMSD and bears a GU Mark.  All newly-installed gas water heaters must be the room-sealed (balanced flue) type water heaters

Pursuant to the Gas Safety Regulations

It is now against the law to install any open-flued (natural draught) gas water heater. Only those flueless (sink) gas water heaters installed before April 1, 2000 for kitchen washing purposes can continue to be installed used, but you need to open the windows and ensure adequate ventilation in the room during use.  This type of water heater should not be used for more than 5 minutes continuously.  It is an offence to connect a flueless (sink) gas water heater for supplying hot water for bath or shower puproses.

LPG meter and LPG main switch

LPG meters and main switches should be well ventilated so that LPG leakage can be easily detected. If LPG supply is being interrupted, the LPG main switch should be turned off immediately until further notice from the operator. If you are traveling abroad or the unit will be vacant for a long time, please turn off the LPG main switch.

Cooking stove

The gas cooking stove must be installed on the original stove in the unit. If the stove does not bear a GU mark, please replace it as soon as possible. Soft rubber hoses need to be replaced based on the expiration date and every three years. Keep cleaning regularly to avoid accumulation of oil stains and shortening the life of soft rubber hoses.

Safety inspection

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department calls on gas installations to undergo regular safety inspections every 18 months.

To ensure home safety, the operator Wan Kau Kee Limited will appoint registered gas technicians to provide customers with free regular safety inspection services every 18 months to ensure that LPG stoves and related devices are operating normally.
